What is Neuroma?

A neuroma is a pinched nerve in the ball of the foot that can cause pain, burning, tingling, and numbness that extends into the toes, in particular in the 3rd and 4th toes. A bursa can also be present, which, if inflamed will press onto the nerve.

Squeezing of the forefoot due to high heels, narrow shoes or a wide foot will pinch nerves. Sport or repetitive activities that overload the ball of the foot can also cause a neuroma or bursa.

Neuromas can also occur in conjunction with damaged joints, ligaments, and other structures in the ball of the foot.
